1998: It was a dark moment in my life.

I was going through a rough break-up with a boyfriend. I was trying to figure out what many of us want to know – what the “meaning” of life is. I was trying to figure out my own identity. I felt utterly…and completely…

…lost.

One day I walked into the store to shop for groceries. My mind was numb with sadness. But then, I heard this Michael Jackson song playing…

“…Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you’re far away
I am here to stay

But you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we’re far apart
You’re always in my heart
But you are not alone…”

I heard those words and it gave me a glimmer of hope. I felt The Universe was sending me this message via Michael Jackson…

I was not alone.

To this day I remember that moment – the moment when Michael Jackson was the catalyst to help lift my spirits, as his songs have always done, on a day when I had lost hope.

Thank you for shining your light on this world, Michael. Your music and your spirit will live forever in our hearts.

Music and Memories

It’s amazing how a song can spur up so many long-forgotten memories…I was in a restaurant last night having dinner and the background music consisted of melodies from the 80’s – a time when my family and I did quite a bit of traveling, especially summer camping trips. As they say, “It was the good ole days…”

It’s interesting to me how songs can carry with them so many stories. Of course, the singer singing the song has a story to share, but all the people that a particular song reached also have a story that coincides with that song. In essence, there’s a great deal of sentiment and emotion related to songs. For one person, hearing a certain song brings memories of love while that same song could mean heartache for another. For me, music has a way of bringing out these feelings of nostalgia that photographs can’t do.

Last night David Cook sang “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran. I suddenly felt this wave of giddy-like excitement wash over me as if I was a teenager watching Duran Duran performing on TV again. Here’s the video from David Cook’s performance…

If there is one artist who has made a musical impact in this world, it is the legendary Neil Young. Watching Neil Young in action is quite extraordinary. He plays the harmonica, piano, and guitar with ease and mesmorizes audiences in his own style of music. Some call it rock, others say it’s folklore – whatever you call it, it fills your soul and makes you forget about all the problems of the world. As a “flower child” of the 70’s and 80’s, this is the kind of music I appreciate. You don’t find too much of it nowadays.

Nostalgic Sunday With The Jets

Sirius Satellite Radio – Love Songs: Nothing else puts me in a mellow mood – the type of mood needed to engage in some Sunday light housekeeping.

One of the songs I heard today was The Jets: You Got It All. I came across the video over at YouTube:

I get a little nostalgic when I hear this song. Memories of junior high dances standing on the sidelines just waiting for that crush to walk over and ask me to dance!

I actually was able to see The Jets in concert on a trip to Japan back in the early 90’s. I’ll have to dig up those pictures and post them here…

80’s Music Video: Boy George – “Karma Chameleon”

During the 80’s I always had the radio on…Maybe that’s why I know so many songs. Plus, back in those days we had to listen to music during road trips. There was no such thing as car TV’s, GameBoys, or DVD players – at least not in our household!

One of my favorite artists to listen to back then was Boy George. For whatever reason, the song Karma Chameleon was on my mind tonight so I thought I’d check out YouTube to see if I could find it. Sure enough…

Remember back then when there was substance to videos? I don’t watch too many videos nowadays because many of them lack creativity or even a story line…

Oldies But Goodies: The Beatles

After I wrote up my last post about Prince being in the UK, I got to thinking about making a trip to Europe next summer! I also started thinking about one of the bands I listened to just about every other day…The Beatles. My father is a huge Beatles fan, so whenever we went on road trips, you can best believe that The Beatles were going to be a part of that drive!

The Beatles started out in Liverpool, England and eventually made their way into the hearts of Americans. The group consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. What I like about The Beatles is that they were trend setters. They had the talent and creativity to explore new avenues in their recordings as well as introduce string and brass ensembles into their rock music. I also love that their songs are upbeat – just nice, wholesome music that your kids could listen to However, back then I’m sure many parents didn’t put up with that “rock and roll” music. How much has changed!

So, as I begin to plan my trip to Europe for next summer, I would love to visit the places that The Beatles have left their footprints – like the Cavern Club and the Cavern Pub. I would also love to attend any of the music festivals going on as well as sample the nightlife. Let’s see if the Brits can party like us!

I’ve started my search for decent London Hotels to stay at as well as Edinburgh Hotels and Glasgow Hotels. Other cities in Europe on the list to visit include Paris, Amsterdam, and possibly Milan!

“Ben” was one of the first songs I learned to play on the piano and as I was browsing through YouTube tonight, I came across this video of a very young Michael Jackson. Wow – he looks so different. I’m digging the bright and colorful suit he has on

Speaking of – I was a huge Michael Jackson fan. I remember a road trip my family and I took to the Bay Area where my mom bought me this purple (my favorite color) and black wallet with Michael Jackson’s face on it. Oh, the good ole days…when you get excited over a wallet!

I did a search to see what he’s been up to and found this article that says he may be in Vegas creating a show with a 50-foot robotic replica of himself?
